With a total combat weight per man equivalent to that planned for riflemen armed with the M-14, a squad consisting of from 5-7 men armed with the would have better hit distribution and greater hit capability than the present eleven-man M-14 squad.

In fact, a report from 1959 comparing the ArmaLite to the M14 lead to these findings:Ī. The rifle itself was much lighter, and the weight savings between rifle and ammunition meant that soldiers could carry almost three times as much ammo as with the M14. The smaller lighter 5.56 (.223) caliber meant the rifle could be better controlled in automatic fire. The M16 offered a number of advantages, primarily attributable to its lower weight. The M16 was shipped to soldiers in Vietnam to replace the standard issue M14. ArmaLite sold its rights to the rifle in 1959 to Colt Firearms. On the previous page they only list removeable carry handle assemblies. It fired the same caliber as the M14, a 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. Is this what I would need to replace the original A2 screw and then reuse the remaining A2 rear sight parts? I don't see any mention between A2 & removeable lengths. I just check WOA and they have this rear sight elevation index screw. Looks like I'll need to get a new RRA NM A2 removeable upper that should have a shorter sight screw? Or is there somewhere I can buy the shorter screw to replace the too tall A2 screw? See the picture on the bottom of the page at this link Straight swapping won't work as the A2 sight screw will be taller than the carry handle and flat top will allow.
WILL A2 CARRY HANDLE MOD
Check out Keystone accuracy, as John does this mod to provide more elevation adjustment than what the standard carry handle would allow for.
WILL A2 CARRY HANDLE INSTALL
I believe if you want to install the A2 sight in the carry handle, you will need to relieve the top of the flat top upper for it to work. Unless someone can point out that the A2 rear sight somehow has a deeper penetration into the A2 receiver than what I can see. I think the A2 rear NM sight should work on the flat-top since the A2 upper has to have the hole through into the CH slot for installation, whereas the removeable carry-handle already has the hole in it. The only differences I see is the RRA and Colt have different finishes (blackish vs grayish). I don't think the RRA A2 upper is any different dimensionally than a Colt A2 upper. I hear what you're saying, but it seems it would be easier to swap out the rear sight assemblies than doing a barrel change on the HBAR just to get a NM sight on it. Then you could just take the entire NM A2 upper receiver and put it on the old HBAR.

If you want to get fancy they sell one half and one quarter windage kits (aperature and screw) which would get you to 90%. You can simply switch out the stock aperture for a 1/2 min NM aperature from some place like White Oak Armament and you are 80% there. The stock removable CH has half minute windage and elevation adjustments already. Instead of gutting your A2 NM receiver consider this: That should be OK in case I shoot any Mil Match events where I can use the HBAR, I think? I guess if I have issues with the removeable CH I could put the RRA NM sight on my old HBAR since it just has the standard rear on it. I still have my old Colt HBAR from the 80's college days so that will be my only A2. The soon-to-be old A2 carry handle upper will be sight-less. With another removeable CH available if there's an issue I can just figure out which works best with the new configuration.

But with this RRA NM rebuild I'll be shooting with an optic from no on 99% of the time. The removeable CH has the hole the whole way through and I have another with a non-NM sight on it and it bottoms out OK, but if the NM sight is longer we'll see how far down it gets and how that affects shooting. I have fat fingers when I comes to tiny spring & such so I'll leave the sight swap to him. I ordered a Schuster tool to make the task easier based on feedback. The A2 receiver has a hole that goes all the way through to the charging handle track. Don't know if you can get it all the way down when installed on the rifle. The threaded lug on the A2 sight base is longer than the one on the removable CH.
